part2﹠3    Describe a broken thing you have in your home.
You should say:
       what it is;
       what it looks like;
       why it is broken;
and explain how you would like to repair it.
    1. What electrical appliances are generally used in homes in China? Why do people feel they need these things?
    2. What is the difference between the modern technology and that in the past ?
    3. What is your opinion about second hand goods?
    4. Do Chinese people tend to buy a second hand product or a new one? Why?

Part 2:   The broken thing I have now in my home, which really annoys me, is the microwave in my kitchen. It is an ordinary microwave and its design looks sort of boring. You can find it in any electronics & appliances retail store.  It is white, medium sized with all kind of functions including popcorn, auto defrost, beverage, etc. The problem is the  spinning plate inside the microwave is not spinning, because the gadget which is underneath the spinning plate which helps the plate spin was broken quite a while ago.   Because the plate of the microwave is not spinning it is a trouble every time when I cook. The food always overcooked in some spots and cold in others, and sometimes if I forget to open the door to spin it myself the popcorn could be burned like charcoal and smoke would fill the kitchen.  I could not remember exactly when and why that gadget was broken, it probably was my husband, coz he is the one has clumsy fingers and always breaks things in the house.  Although I am annoyed every time when I use that microwave to cook food, I still don’t want to discard it because I believe that I can get it fixed if I can find the right gadget.  I will keep eyes on hardware stores like Home Hardware and Canadian Tire and even the internet. As long as I can get the right thing I will fix it myself because the microwave was designed in a user friendly way, and of course I  will not let  my husband come into the kitchen  before my  perfect meal is nuked.

In retrospect, I still vividly remember every detail the day I gave birth to my son. It seems as if it was in a blink of an eye that my little boy has started cutting teeth, crawling and babbling words and sounds. He likes to taste everything that he can grasp, so I have to collect mouth-sized terrors like buttons, coins and even markers and books that his sister scatters on the floor, and make sure that in the house there is nothing harmful like plastic bags he could reach, which might make him choke to death. He actually is a happy camper that he laughs a lot and  is easy to be content. Most of the time, when my eyes meet his gaze, I would get a bunch of chuckles from him,  hu hu hu…, with his 2 little top front teeth sticking out.

part2﹠3    Describe an old person.
You should say:
      who the person is;
       how old this person is;
       how her or his health condition is;
and explain how you get along with her or him.
    1. How is the situation of old people in your country?
    2. Should the retirement age for old people be lengthened?
3.Is it easy for old people to find jobs when they have retired?
4.How you show others that you care about old people?

Part 2:

The old person that I want to talk about is my grandmother, my father’s mom. My grandmother is 98 years old, living in China with my aunt. She had been in a good condition, fit as a fiddle until last year. She was very sick last year, almost at death’s door--she took a turn for the worse because of the problems in the digestive system. Fortunately, she was over the worst a few months ago and now she is on the mend. Hope she could be back on her feet again soon.  She is an old-fashioned person who never believes in western medicines, so it is hard to get her to have a physical, draw blood, and take her temperature and everything, no mention taking medicine pills from the hospital. My aunt was desperate once grandmother pulled off the intravenous drip and attempted to escape from the hospital. So my aunt decided that she was allowed to do whatever she wished. As a result, she quit the treatment, left the hospital and went home.

I could not get along with my grandmother when I was a little girl. In fact, I don’t really like her because she has been prejudiced against girls in the family. She thought that girls are not important and after they are married out they wouldn’t be good to the family anymore, so girls should work hard and eat less at home. Having said that, I don’t mean to condemn her being prejudiced against me, a girl in the family. I understand that she herself is also one of the victims of the darn feudal  thoughts and the patriarchalism. Unfortunately, in her eyes, I was always a black sheep, a rebel in her “kingdom”, because I appeared to have my own thoughts which was not allowed, and I fought against the unfair treatment I received from her.  Obviously she didn’t like me either. But that was then and this is now.  Today, I still chip in when I am asked to financially support her living expenses, but to be honest, sometimes, recalling her faults, I  am reluctant.

The Bone Collector (1999)
Denzel Washington plays a quadriplegic homicide detective. He and his female partner track down a serial killer.

Storyline
Quadripeligic ex-cop Lincoln Rhyme was looking forward to his assisted suicide when he got the news: some sicko was abducting people in a taxi and leaving them to die in particularly sadistic ways. With time counting down between each abduction and possible death, Rhyme recruits rather-unwilling Amelia Donaghy, haunted by her cop father's suicide and thinking she's next, into working the crime scenes to track down the killer.

It is Not Funny

It is not funny to sprain your foot when you do a wiggle groove
It is not funny to laugh so hard and you pop out your last  fake tooth
It is not funny to get diarrhea after you finish last night’s soup
It is not funny to have some bird droppings splatters on your hood when you can’t give the damned bird a boot.
It is not funny your boss asks you to work overtime when you think you can leave earlier.
It is not funny to receive your girlfriend’s “Dear John” letter when you think the relationship couldn’t be better
It is not funny after dinner and you find you forget your wallet
It is not funny when you want some tranquility and  a bee  bugs you with its winglets.
It is not funny all of the above is true
Facing such an "ordeal" what should you do?

China’s social network share sale

http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-ca&vid=308 … alink:null

Price-to-Sales Beating Facebook

Renren Inc., China’s biggest social- networking website by page views, surged 29 percent in New York Stock Exchange trading after raising $743.4 million in its initial public offering.

The Beijing-based company sold 53.1 million American depositary receipts at $14 each, the high end of the proposed range, according to a company statement yesterday. The stock rose $4.01 to $18.01 as of 4 p.m. yesterday. Including the sale of 7.97 million ADRs sold through an overallotment option with underwriters, Renren’s IPO raised $855 million.

At its $14 initial price, Renren would be valued at 72 times last year’s sales, compared with 25 times for social- networking site Facebook Inc. as valued by Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s investment in the U.S. company. Renren commands a premium because China’s economy may grow three times faster than the U.S. and about two-thirds of the population isn’t online.

“Worldwide internet players that leverage social networks and monetize them well will have a very good chance at high growth and a chance to go public,” said David Chao, co-founder of the Menlo Park, California-based venture capital firm DCM, who says his fund has given Renren about $20 million. “This is a really good time for a lot of companies in China that have been growing very well because the overall market in China is growing very rapidly.”

Sina, Tencent
Renren, which also offers games and daily deals for consumers, is the first social-networking site to go public in the U.S. and will use proceeds to expand in the world’s biggest Internet market by users. Renren faces competition for advertisers and users from local Internet companies Sina Corp. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. (TCEHY)

Sina, owner of China’s most-popular microblogging site, fell 2.8 percent in U.S. trading yesterday. Other U.S.-traded Chinese Internet stocks including Baidu Inc. and Sohu.com Inc. also declined.

The website operator is one of 34 companies that announced plans for U.S. IPOs in April, the busiest month for new filings since August 2007, according to Renaissance Capital LLC, the Greenwich, Connecticut-based IPO investment firm.

China had 457 million Internet users at the end of 2010 and about half of them used social-networking websites, according to data from the government-sponsored China Internet Network Information Center. Renren had 117 million users as of March 31, according to its prospectus.

‘Exuberant Territory’
At least three Chinese Internet companies announced IPO plans last month as Youku.com Inc. (YOKU), the Beijing-based online- video site, trades at more than 100 times 2010 sales following its December IPO.

“We’re at least in exuberant territory, if not a bubble, with Chinese Internet stocks,” said Michael Yoshikami, who oversees $1.1 billion as chief investment strategist at YCMNet Advisors in Walnut Creek, California. “Investors need to be very aware that if the company doesn’t execute on these lofty expectations, they are in for a rude awakening.”
Renren, whose name means “everyone” in Chinese, had 117 million users as of March 31, less than a quarter of the more than 500 million users Facebook has globally. The company boosted the maximum sought in its IPO by 27 percent on April 29.

‘Valuation Risks’
Facebook, which is banned in China, said in January it had a market valuation of $50 billion after raising $1.5 billion from investors including Goldman Sachs and Russia’s Digital Sky Technologies. The Palo Alto, California-based company may have reached about $2 billion in revenue last year, three people with knowledge of the matter said in December.

Some Chinese Internet stocks may have “high valuation risks,” said Kai-Fu Lee, a former Google Inc. executive whose Beijing-based venture fund invests in startups, in an April 15 interview on Bloomberg Television.

China, which requires domestic websites to self-censor content deemed unacceptable to the ruling Communist Party, and blocks overseas services such as Facebook and Google Inc.’s Youtube, has set up a new department under the cabinet to supervise the Internet, the official Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

Group-Buying Site
Besides its social network, Renren operates a group-buying site that offers daily deals on local services and cultural events, Nuomi.com, and an online games site. In 2006, Renren acquired Xiaonei.com, a social networking site founded by graduates of Beijing’s Tsinghua University in 2005. Renren, formerly known as Oak Pacific Interactive, began operations in 2002, according to the IPO prospectus.

“The world has never seen the kind of growth we’re seeing out of Internet companies in China,” said Lou Kerner, a social media analyst at Wedbush Securities Inc. in New York.

From Zero to Ten

At a friend’s party, John zeroed in on Kate and he decided to go for her  at  first look. He thought the beautiful and smiling Kate was one in a million girls.  Without being in two minds, John asked Kate to be his girlfriend. Later on, at Kate’s home, her parents asked John many questions as if they were the policemen who giving the third degree:  What do you do? How much do you make? Do you have a house? Do you have a car? so on and so forth.  John was stunned, feeling like  someone just hit him in the noggin,  in the four corners of nowhere and realizing that his answers did not please them. Ever since meeting Kate’s parents, Kate stopped seeing him and asked him to take five. John was knocked for six, but he was not at sixes and sevens that he knew he was broke that he had no car and house. That’s why her parents didn’t approve of their relationship.  Having one over the eight for a few times with his best friend at a pub, John started to refuse to let this shXX sidetrack him. To stave off upset he decided worked harder than before.  He heard that Kate still got dressed to the nines to see some other guys. It is up to her.  “Women are ten a penny”---Thinking about Kate this way made him feels better.

Numerical idioms

Zero in on
Zero tolerance
One in a million
I owe you one
Look after number one
Back to square one
Kill two birds with one stone
In two birds with one stone
In two minds
Put two and two together
Three’s a crowd
Phoney as a three dollar bill
On all fours
A four letter word
Take five
Give me five
A five o’clock shadow
Six of one, half a dozen of another
To be at sixes and sevens
A seven day wonder
Seven year itch
Behind the eight ball
One over the eight
On cloud  nine
Dressed to the nines
Nine times out of ten
Stitch in time(saves nine)
Ten a penny
Wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole
At the eleventh hour

Firework Lyrics----Katy Perry

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you?

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed
(From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/k/katy-perr … rics.html)
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow
And when it's time, you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

'Cause baby you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through

'Cause baby you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

Yesterday evening while I was poring  over my book in the living room I heard a thump. That was my daughter stirring up trouble in the kitchen. The fishbowl sitting on the window ledge was knocked over. The sea monkeys in the fishbowl were poured out to the floor and started to wiggle and waggle, very nasty. My daughter said she was about to water her little pot plants right next to the fishbowl but the ledge is too narrow. “Mama! We have a small house, we suppose to have a bigger house” she said. I rolled my eyes and chuckled: “yeah, you are right, you got to talk to your daddy, he is your ‘cash cow’” 昨 天 傍 晚 我 在 客 厅 专 心 看 书的 时 候  我 听 到 砰 然 一 声 。

Surgery victim sues for $2.2M

/16achhleh

A woman has just spoken out about the uneeded mastectomy she underwent last November and a lawsuit she is launching seeking more than 2 million dollars in damages. Laurie Johnston’s breast was removed in Winsor Hôtel-Dieu Grace hospital, even though she did not have cancer. Today she spoke to the media about the impact on her and her family. To learn that my breast was removed unnecessary, it is devastating for me and for them. Another patient has come forward to say that Dr. Heartwell did the same thing to her; it is shocking to me to know that what happened to me could have been prevented, if only I had known. CBC Kelly Crowe is in that news conference  she is joining to me now alive, Kelly fill me on what else Laurie Johnston also her lawyer what did they  have  to say  today . well, Laurie Johnston also has interest in telling about the month after she found that she has mistaken mastectomy, her first doctor report was released that she did not have cancer, but once that’s past she thought that thing, well, ok, if she can make one mistake, maybe she can make another mistake, maybe when she said I don’t have cancer I really do. So she went through other two months of worrying looking for second opinion she only got the word that a couple of weeks ago that know she doesn’t have to worry, she doesn’t have cancer. So investigators are still looking over I understand, hospital records, because of this, what do you think stand on effort?  Well, there are 3 investigation are going  right now, the Ontario government is looking into this, the College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario is looking into it and  like you say the hospital itself is now going over the pathology reports. Very closely they say the look at, they’ve  got about 3500 they consider high risk cases , cases where the decision out of pathology report could have effected patient care, they’ve  reviewed 1100 of those so far, and they say they haven’t found any problem that would have effected patient care. They think they would get through the rest of those high risk cases in the next 3 weeks, then they start moving down the list looking at other pathology reports that don’t have such serious impact on patient care, so it is going to take a while.  Thank you so much for that, that is CBC Kelly Crowe in Toronto.

What a Crappy Day

Oh shoot! I caught a cold again. I started to feel a headache 2 days ago, accompanying with a sore throat, a stuffy nose, achy muscles and coughs with phlegm. My husband is over 1000 miles away from me in Ottawa on a business trip and he will come back home a couple of days later, so I got no one to help me with my housework at this moment when I am sick like a dog. Just looking at dishes piling up in the sink makes me feel sicker.  But the lucky thing is, he helped me fill up the gas tank the other day before he left, so I wouldn’t worry about the gas today on the way going to Saint John airport to pick up my friend who took the redeye flight in Calgary last night. With  bad coughs and a stuffy nose I didn’t have a good night last night, but that is ok,  I am going to pick up a Tim Hortons’double-double on the way going to get my friend, hoping it will perk me up a bit (I was thinking to make me a pot of coffee but could not find my coffee pot, it must be somewhere underneath that pile of dishes.) What a crappy day!
